The Queen of Gems & Gem of Queens

We love this famous quotation by Anon: "The pearl is the queen of gems and the gem of queens". We think it is very true, since it’s one of our signature jewellery materials. So today, we thought why not tell you a bit more about this queen of gems.
Pearls are the oldest known gem; and across time and culture have had different mythological stories associated with them. Old Arabian, Greek, and Roman legends tell us that the pearl is formed when dewdrops filled with Moonlight fall to the ocean and are swallowed by oysters.
The pearl is almost always associated with the moon, and is usually considered to be feminine in nature. One of the earliest pearl myths is from the Hindu book of the Rigveda, in which Krishna descends into the ocean, discovers the first pearl, and gifts it to his daughter on her wedding day. This association between femininity, pearls and brides (make this a link to our bridal category) continues to this day.
What’s more, the beauty of the pearl is that it reveals its inner glow without any human action – unlike diamonds or other stones it doesn’t need to be cut or polished. As George F. Kunz, the famous early 20th century mineral collector said: "The pearl owes nothing to man. It is absolutely a gift of nature on which man cannot improve."
Pearl colour has also a very symbolic value, while white pearls are emblematic of innocence and faith, gold and black pearls represent prosperity, and pink pearls symbolize love and generosity. Which reminds us, look out for our pink pearls in-store soon!

The Legendary Coco Chanel

We draw inspiration from lots of sources here at Gilda’s Tryst. And Chanel is naturally one of our icons, being one of the most famous names in the history of Fashion and a quintessential pearl lover.
Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel invented the notion of casual chic, establishing simplicity as an essential to true elegance. Her influence transformed the idea one had of Haute Couture, and has fueled the Chanel legend for more than a century.
A woman after our own hearts - Coco Chanel herself once said: “Fashion passes, style remains”. If you’re looking to emulate that simple, timeless elegance, that intense and eternal black & white Chanel style, our Pearl & Onyx Garotte Choker from our Freshwater Pearl collection is the perfect piece.
Wear it with a strapless dress, or an open white shirt for a strong yet simple statement look.

Co-Founders Diary: A Night Of Gilda's Tryst Style Retro Fun

We went to the Other Cinema at the Troxy this week - our men wearing black ties, ladies glammed up, Big Band music, flowing bubbly and finally - after the band, a show with dancing and comedy, after that the pearly kings and queens, and then finally David Lean's Brief Encounter.
I (Shireen) had never seen it and absolutely loved it.  In some ways, this 1945 film captures a period in time that feels so far away (telephones in tobaccanists, an acceptance between this pair who fall in love so intensely that this has to be sacrificed because, socially, exiting their own marriages was not an option) and yet the film also felt like it could have been written today -  when Celia Johnson's character Laura talks about that experience of meeting and connecting with Trevor Howard's Alec, of doubt and ambivalence of the temptation to stray, the film feels like it hasn't aged in the slightest.  Oh and Amanda and I remembered that Celia Johnson used to go to our school and that we used to have drama classes in a theatre  named after her.
